RSVP for our Fall Concert: The Light of Reason
November 14, 2004
For several years now, the New Jersey Humanist Network has sponsored a program of encouraging music with a humanist content. We feel that music is a wonderful way to reach an audience not accessed by our usual lecture-type programs. Music can also teach the outside community our message, much as John Lennon’s “Imagine” did. Music with religious messages fills our culture. Nontheistic singers in community choruses often sing religious music and are told that 1) there is no humanist music and 2) religious music is so beautiful. If there is no audience for humanist music, and no one is commissioning humanist works (as churches commission religious pieces), then where will humanist music emerge? If composers are writing humanist music for their own enjoyment, how can we discover it and bring this music to the attention of other humanists?
Our goal is to produce music of value to the entire community of Humanists, for other groups to use in organizing concerts and adding music to their special occasions. We want to support Humanist musicians who lack recognition and financial support in a religiously-oriented society. We want to bring the Humanist message to a wider range of people, especially young people who enjoy listening to different music.
Featured performers in this concert are:
• The LeHigh Valley Gay Men’s Chorus, of which NJHN’s founder Harley Brown is a member
• The Humanistics, currently comprised of 8 members of New Jersey’s Humanist community
• Faire Morning, an English madrigals a capella trio, of which NJHN’s Tim Ridge is a member
• The Four Tunes, a barbershop quartet including Harley Brown
